A Sunflower

Terri Webster Schrandt

For Word Craft Poetry #TankaTuesday Weekly #Poetry Challenge No. 333

I remember seeing
In my childhood yard
A sunflower twice my size growing wildly
Nothing else like it shined
So bright and happy

I wanted to be it
Put my face on it
Dare to look up at the blazing ball of fire
Let it burn away shame
Golden horizon

If only I was tall
Enough to touch it
Silky yellow petals like rays of sunshine
A taste of victory
On my finger tips

#doubleennead

The following photos were taken by a friend of mine on vacation in Maui in April. What a beautiful sight.

  2. Beautiful poem to go with both images of the sunflowers! I would never think of sunflowers being grown in Hawaii.

      Thank you, Terri! 🌻

I hope they can keep growing them in Maui after the fires. 😢

  3. Excellent imagery! (The double ennead has 3 stanzas of 33 syllables each… to get to the 99 syllables—you’re so close). I didn’t know about the sunflowers growing in Hawaii. I’ve never seen a field of sunflowers! It’s stunning. 🌻

Haha I knew something was missing! I updated it. Thank you, Colleen! Unfortunately, I think all of it has burned up! 😢

Oh… I visited Maui years ago. But in September.
Though I have been lucky enough to see such displays locally.
There is even a small section of you pick sunflowers at a local farm stand…

I feel for those on that Island. May they recover quickly.
